Microsoft tells the story for Windows Phone 8, with a little help from Jessica Alba

Microsoft tells the story for Windows Phone 8, with a little help from Jessica Alba.

Some of the Windows Phone 8 that will be on sale

That's what happened. Microsoft has revealed a new version of its mobile phone software in a bid to take on Apple and Android.
The firm hopes that by making its software more similar to the new Windows 8 software it launched last week, it can attract more users.
At an event in San Francisco last night, Jessica Alba joined Microsoft bosses on stage for the unveiling, where the firm pledged to bring more apps to the platform.

The company had spent the last 2 years differentiating itself from Apple and Android...in fact, there were so many positive reviews on the live tiles concept that focus on People during the launching of the Windows Phone 7. It was not a success when it comes to sales, partly due to the hardware that is not as strong as the available phones in the market back then. There were also lack of popular third party applications, which are still an issue for the company at the moment.

Microsoft said it will also catch up in offering third-party apps.
There are 120,000 applications available for Windows Phone, but some apps that are popular on other systems are notably missing from Windows Phone because it can be hard to get developers interested in writing programs for a small number of smartphones.
Apple and Google, by comparison, say their app stores both have 700,000 apps for phones.
However, the firm claimed it is patching some of those holes soon: Microsoft vice president Joe Belfiore said Internet radio service Pandora is coming to Windows Phone 8, along with games such as 'Where's My Water?'
Soon, he said, 46 of the 50 most popular smartphone apps will be available.
The company is also releasing an app for Skype, the Internet calling service it owns.
The Skype app available for Windows Phone 7 was an unfinished, or 'beta' version, the firm claimed.
The new Skype app will run in the background, listening for incoming calls without placing any drain on the battery, Belfiore said.

Actress Jessica Alba lent star power to the event, endorsing Kid's Corner as a 'busy mom.'

Owners will also be able link apps to their lock screen, giving them at-a-glance information such as sports scores.
Windows 8 for computers has borrowed its look from Windows Phone 7, presenting applications not as icons but as 'Live Tiles,' which can be animated with data from the application. For instance, the 'Pictures' tile shows a slideshow. The live tiles and the distinctive user interface remain Microsoft's biggest selling points for Windows Phone. In terms of third-party applications and the features of the phones, it's mostly playing catch-up to the iPhone and Android.

Of course, the launching of Windows Phone 8 is one of Microsoft's biggest bet given the emphasis on it even expand to the desktop version, the Windows 8. This will also be the year that Microsoft launch their very own tablet, Surface...with the amount of money spent on advertisement and marketing, it is difficult to see why Microsoft couldn't hurl themselves back into the mobile game.

Singapore Day 1: Gardens by the Bay [teaser]

Well, it was pretty fun to be going down Singapore with my close siblings and YenLeng, people that care the most about me basically...

The view here is amazing...I'm definitely not a "flower" or "garden" lover but the scene and view here are breathtaking...

It was definitely very tiring, with a lot of walking to be done but all of it was worth it when one look at the beauty in nature, something that tells us Someone is Up there and He knows what He is doing...

You look at this and you start to wonder...human can still create a lot of positives in life...not all is left hopeless...

We always need that Wow factor in life and I am still looking for it...maybe traveling into places could help me renew faith...

I'm happy that the people who love me continue to love and trust me...it means a lot...

This journey in the Gardens is definitely a beautiful and meaningful one...

There are times that we have to walk through those difficult steps and roads to see the beauty in life...
There are times that I have to do it alone but I know the search will be a worthwhile one, just like the trip today...

That's all for now...will post more on this once I get back to my laptop...

Life [Part 1]

Work has been a big part of my life recently, but I still make a lot of effort to ensure that I meet up with people, hang out and have fun...

During the Great Leo event....

Last month, while working during the Great Leo 2011/2012 event in Great Eastern, I met up with an old friend, Cheng Sai Mun and his girlfriend.

Sai Mun and I

Cani (Sai Mun's girlfriend) and I
We do not have much time to catch up but it is really good to get to meet old friends and know that they are doing well...am glad to see my friend doing good in his career and with a beautiful girlfriend as well.

I also have quite a lot of fun with my colleagues in Genting.

Irene and Alicia
We went for a short drinking session after work. It was relaxing and good to talk about life and hear from other stories...a lot of things to learn throughout those dialogue sessions.

Irene and I...a colleague that really take good care of me...
While taking breaks in between work...

With my new sister in E&P, Candice....somehow, we look a bit like stepsiblings hor? :-)

During the preparation

In formal wear

When my family and Yenleng came to KL....

My family and Yenleng actually came to KL to visit my grandma (admitted to IJN).

Since my grandma was recovering well, we were all in jolly mood...

Took this while in IJN
During junior and friends' convocation...

Trying on the graduation attire...oops...I'm too old for this already...

I couldn't really take photos with my junior as I had to work on that day but we went for some hang out sessions at night...am really happy to know people like KY, Siow Wei, May Kee, and Choon Foong...

And not forgetting...my Sports Science buddies...happy that you guys finally graduated!!

Some birthday celebrations....

Along the way, there was also some birthday celebrations with my colleagues...

Some snapshots that we took...

Well, there are more coming....

I have loads to talk about the Annual Dinner that I had, the time I hang out with some of my former university friends....people like Wen Shiuan and Chin May....

Then, the people whom I hold closest to my heart...my family members, YenLeng, some of my close friends that I have not get to see for a long long time....I think life is a funny story...there are those people who played such a significant role in your life, who no longer get to spend those special moments with you and yet you remember them so well. People like Liang Hin, Aunty Lindy and many others who help to build my character and strengthen me in times of need....and as I grow older, I began to understand...the stories of friendships and love...it is not about us anymore...it is about a community....about people....and how we make sense of those moments...because each moment carries its' own significant and beautiful value.

Microsoft Prices Surface at $499 to Rival iPad

Read an interesting article from Bloomberg.com and feel excited awaiting the launch of the Microsoft next generation OS - the Windows 8. While I have seen how smooth Windows Phone 7 even with lower end CPU, I wonder how Windows 8 RT will be, although I remember clearly that during the demo of Windows 8 RT when Microsoft announced the launch of the Microsoft very own tablet - Surface few months back, it crashed somewhere. Windows 8 RT, do have similar code base with Windows 8 Pro, but with limited software written for it. Only software written in Windows Runtime (Metro Style app) can be used on Windows RT.

While it is clearly that this tablet will be using the ARM architecture, I wonder whether Microsoft will have any plan to come up with Surface "Pro", with full version of the Windows 8 and using the x86 architecture by Intel? If so, then it will definitely jolt the price of INTC as well as MSFT as consumer will have a tablet, and plug the snap-on cover, you will have a stripped down version of ultrabook. 2 in 1 sounds good to me - especially if it is priced slightly higher than the current top range Surface with free Microsoft Office pre-installed.

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) will sell its first computer, a device called Surface RT, for as little as $499 as the software maker pushes into the tablet market dominated by Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPad.

The first iteration of the device, powered by a chip with technology from ARM Holdings Plc (ARM), will be available as a 32- gigabyte model for $499, the company said in a statement. With a black cover, it will cost $599, and a 64-gigabyte version will be $699. The machine goes on sale Oct. 26, and Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft will take a limited number of early online orders starting at 12 p.m. New York time today.

The world’s largest software maker needed a device priced under $500 to lure customers away from the iPad and to compete with Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) and Google Inc. (GOOG), which are pushing prices lower in the tablet category, said Bob O’Donnell, an analyst at market-research firm IDC. The latest version of the iPad starts at $499 for a 16-gigabyte device that, like the Surface, uses a Wi-Fi short range wireless connection.

“Everything is pulling tablet prices down to below $500, so anything over $500 -- that is a tablet that is going to look expensive,” he said.

The snap-on cover, which includes a full keyboard, is one of the key features that make the Surface different from other tablets. Customers can buy the cover for $119.99 in black, white, magenta, cyan and red, according to the statement.

New Windows

Surface will be sold in Microsoft’s retail stores, including 34 temporary locations set up for the holidays. They’re also available online in the U.S., U.K., China, Germany, France, Hong Kong, Australia and Canada.

The tablet has a 10.6-inch display and will run the new version of Microsoft’s operating system, which also goes on sale Oct. 26.

The software maker is stepping up its assault on the tablet market as consumers choose the devices over laptops, weakening personal-computer sales and curbing Windows revenue. In the third quarter, total global PC shipments fell 8.3 percent from a year earlier to 87.5 million, market-research firm Gartner Inc. said last week.

Since the iPad went on sale in April 2010, Apple has led the tablet market, which is predicted by DisplaySearch to reach $63.2 billion this year. Apple has 61 percent of the market, according to Gartner. Apple may introduce a smaller, less expensive version of the iPad at an event on Oct. 23, a person familiar with the matter said last week.

Apple will probably price the iPad mini at $299 or $349, said Shaw Wu, an analyst at Sterne Agee & Leach Inc. An older version of the iPad sells for $399 in the U.S., according to the company’s website.

Google’s Nexus 7 tablet and some versions of Amazon’s Kindle Fire with 7-inch screens cost $199. Amazon also sells a Fire with an 8.9-inch screen for $299.

Response-ability [part 2]

There are many times that we are agitated by our surroundings...people that do not contribute to the working team....people who are not doing their jobs...either due to laziness or competence level...

I used to be very upset at situation like this...people who didn't finish their work, causing people to blame the department...and yet there are times that I wonder how could these people still sit there as if they are doing the right thing.

I know that I am not perfect as well and I have many flaws...am thankful to so many people that help me to grow along this journey...even as I start to look into the mirror, I knew there are so much that needs improvement...

I believe one of the keys is to focus on what we are capable of doing...enhance on those things and I believe the influence will expand...there are times that I really just don't want to do any of those "shits" but I believe learning from all these will keep me stronger, better and more mature...

I am Response-able....are you??

"you can kick me, punch me and try to knock me down but I'll keep coming back up..."

Response-ability

No other motivational books inspire me as much as the book by Stephen R. Covey, THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE.

For me, the first habit concludes his entire book...PROACTIVE. It was mainly talking about choices.
Whether you know it or not, it is carefully designed by you. The choices, after all, are yours. You choose happiness. You choose sadness. You choose decisiveness. You choose ambivalence. You choose success. You choose failure. You choose courage. You choose fear. Just remember that every moment, every situation, provides a new choice. And in doing so, it gives you a perfect opportunity to do things differently to produce more positive results.

Human beings are special because we are responsible....we have the ability to response....Response-ability.

Honestly, the last few weeks have been pretty disastrous...a lot of things that I'm not satisfied with...at times, it just felt like the world had just fallen apart. I am not the kind of person who talk about things to people...probably, it was due to what I learned in my younger days....

I have decided to push those feelings of miserable and disappointment aside. The truth is: by focusing on what I'm able to do to make things better have helped me to learn a lot of things as well....

So, if the next time you are feeling down, miserable or disappointed, it is not difficult to overcome those feelings...focus on what you are capable of making the things better and you will eventually see the impact of little things.
I am Response-able....are you?
